Program/menu from BABY, The Stars Shine Bright's 1st annual holiday tea party
As you may know, Lydia had the opportunity to go to the first BABY, The Stars Shine Bright tea party during the summer to celebrate the opening of the San Francisco store. As I couldn’t make it to the first tea party myself, I was determined to go to the second – what seems to be the first of an annual winter tea party they’ll be holding in the future.
I must say, I commend the brands for holding these tea parties for their customers every now and then. Not only does a nice little party, build up a lot of customer loyalty by making customers feel appreciated – but customers must do a mini shopping blitz to score tickets. In this case, starting December 1st, customers had to spend $200 at BABY, The Stars Shine Bright and request an invite in order to score one.

Chandeliers by Kim Songhe at NEW PEOPLE's Tokyo Creators Market (Photo by: Umi)
On November 20, Lydia and I attended a private party at San Francisco’s NEW PEOPLE complex to celebrate the opening of the Tokyo Creators Market exhibit in the art gallery. One of the artists featured in the gallery is Kim Songhe who transforms kitschy knicknacks into artistic chandeliers and other pieces of home decor. Our favorite piece was the chandelier at the forefront of the picture above which was decked out in flowers, tea cups and saucers, teddy bears, beads, crosses, skeleton keys and even a few skeleton charms. It would surely be a lovely addition to the home of any Lolita.
It reminded me of a do-it-yourself project I saw a while back on making a teacup chandelier. It also gave us one heck of an idea. Why not make our own chandeliers and personalize the designs to make it all our own. And thus, the challenge was born!
Lydia and I are crafty girls, but chandelier makers we are not, so it’s a fair competition. We’ve set a deadline for January 1st and we’ll have you guys be the judge via online poll. In case anyone is interested in participating as well – here’s an open call for your submissions. Email us with a description and photos by January 1st.

Sara Ruth, designer & founder of Pink Macaroon (Photo by: Lydia)
Lolitas looking for sweet prints need to learn the name, Pink Macaroon. This American-born indie Lolita label is known for its sugary prints featuring a unicorn motif. This line of clothing is the brainchild of Sarah Ruth – an American Lolita and designer turned entrepreneur – who recently had the opportunity to work with Sanrio.
A Hello Kitty-inspired outfit designed by Pink Macaroon will be shown this Saturday, November 14 at the Three Apples Exhibit Fashion Show Party in Culver City, Calif. to commemorate Hello Kitty’s 35th anniversary. For more information on attending this event, please visit Royal/T Cafe, Store and Art Space.
Hit the jump for an interview with Sarah Ruth about her inspiration for Pink Macaroon, how it felt to design for Sanrio’s most iconic character and a sneak peek at her newest print.

Kokusyoku Sumire (Source: Kokusyoku Sumire Myspace)
New York Anime Festival is coming up and runs September 25-27, 2009 and there are a few reasons why you should consider going. First, famed Lolita musical duo, Kokusyoku Sumire, will be performing their special brand of classical and baroque-influenced gothic music. Second, according to a recent announcement, BABY, The Stars Shine Bright will partner with Kinokuniya to bring an official clothing boutique to the convention.
A concert and some shopping – sounds like the perfect weekend to me.

The day after their grand opening, Baby, the Stars Shine Bright held an invite-only tea party for the first 50 people who spent $200 or more at the store. Festivities were held in the Superfrog Gallery, just upstairs from Baby, and was catered by Miette and the Secret Garden Tea House.

Pink teacups printed with Baby, the Stars Shine Bright logos... adorable!

BABY, The Stars Shine Bright muse and one of Japan's "Kawaii" Ambassadors, Misako Aoki, posing in front of the BABY, The Stars Shine Bright Store on August 15 (Photo by: Umi)
In a way, the heavens parted on Saturday, August 15 for many die-hard Lolita fans. Frilly fashionistas had descended upon San Francisco’s Japantown from such fashionable cities as Los Angeles and New York to be there for the NEW PEOPLE grand opening festivities. Many of the first people to enter the NEW PEOPLE complex were dedicated Lolitas seeking the coveted BABY, The Stars Shine Bright tea party invitations. Those who sought comfort in simpler silhouettes with a Gothic Lolita flair followed suit gravitating towards the Black Peace Now store.
Those who were already well-versed in Lolita fashion were elated to finally have a location they could flock to and braved a two-hour wait in an un-completed building that lacked air conditioning and a working credit card machine on the fashion floor. BABY’s long line was dominated by flufy petticoats with the occassional bystander, a boyfriend or a parent, begrudgingly standing by. Which is why Kaylyn, a girl wearing jeans and tightly clutching a BABY, The Stars Shine Bright shopping bag, stood apart from the rest of the day’s BABY customers.

Sorry for the wait on this set, but I took a lot of pictures of the Baby, the Stars Shine Bright. The San Francisco Baby store is the first in the US and only one of two retail locations outside of Japan.
BtSSB was packed on the opening day of Viz’s New People center. Excited lolitas filled the store clutching jumper-skirts and accessories–it was quite a sight! For those who couldn’t make the grand opening, here’s the scene just after the first wave of shoppers were allowed in…

The calm before the storm... Notice the lucky packs inside that Alice and the Pirates chest. That chest doesn't stay full for long!
