Summer Lolita Style Sunday, Jun 21 2009

A few weeks ago, we put up a selection of sandals as options to keep cool while wearing Lolita in the hot summer weather. Here’s a few other tips on putting together outfits that will keep the sane in lolita fashion in the summer heat.

1. Put your hair in an up-do or pigtails

If you have long hair, keep the hair off your neck with low pigtails or sweep it up into a ponytail or up-do. You can still rock the curls if you want to, but keeping the hair off of your neck and shoulders will reduce the amount of heat and moisture that gets trapped in that area which causes that sticky unpleasant feeling.

Lolita Hairstyles: Loose Curls Friday, Jun 12 2009

Curls are popular in lolita hairstyles. Since I’m not too great with up-dos, my favorite way to wear my hair while in lolita are loose curls worn down, which can be worn with both long and  chin-length hairstyles.

To achieve loose curls, I like using a straightening iron. Yes. a straightner. As in the opposite of a curling iron. I stumbled on the process quite by accident while simply trying to curl under the ends of my hair, but I miscalculated and tried to curl it under a little too much but found a straightening iron could produce very lovely looking large curls. Check out the tutorial below from handbagcom via YouTube that shows the basics of curling your hair with a straightening iron.

I personally like alternating the direction I curl the hair when moving from each section of hair (ie. towards your face, then away from your face). It gives the whole head of hair a great natural looking, unstructured look that is much more difficult to achieve if all the hair was curling in the same direction.

A new approach on the “hair” bow Friday, Jun 5 2009

Ever feel at a loss about what accessory to wear on your head?

I always have an outfit or two in my lolita fashion closet that I always have a tough time with when it comes to coordinating headwear – nothing really matches! That’s why when my friend Stephanie posted a video blog not too long ago that featured a giant bow hairstyle, I immediately thought it was the perfect solution for that conundrum.

Stephanie took her style cue from Lady Gaga (pictured below) and her Hello Kitty-like hairstyle. I like it a lot. Now to try to figure out how I put one together.

An Introduction to Lolita Nail Art Tuesday, May 19 2009

Gothic Lolita Nail Art from Mini Nail Blog

Lolita nail art is like adding sugar flowers to an already frosted cake – unnecessary, but it sure is pretty! If you’ve ever seen photos of lolita nail art in Gothic & Lolita Bible or Kera Magazine, you know that some of the designs can get pretty involved and are probably best left to professionals or serious nail art hobbyists. However, even a beginner can try their hand at nail art.

Some basic materials you need can be found at your local drug store or beauty store.

  • Artificial nails
  • Nail polish
  • Nail or body art decorations
  • Nail glue

But don’t stop their, stop at your local craft store for some of the following.

  • Lace
  • Small gems or beads
  • Tulle
  • Fabric or plastic flowers or bows
  • Chains
  • Small feathers

And, you can get creative by trying out stickers, cell phone decorations supplies and any other little bits and bobs that catch your attention.
