Real Lolita Style: Fanime 2009 – part 4 Thursday, May 28 2009

This lolita actually stopped to talk to me first because she recognized me, little did she know I was already heading in her direction to interview her and snap this photo. Photo taken on Sunday, May 24 at Fanime artist alley.

What style of lolita are you wearing? I don’t really know but I’d like to call it cupcake lolita because I’m wearing two petticoats.

Why do you wear lolita? I love the feeling of being a lolita. It’s almost like an attitude. I try to be very cute and I somewhat like to shock people by wearing it especially if its outside of an anime convention.

Ring-a-holic Thursday, May 28 2009

I’ve never been one to wear very much jewelry, but something about lolita fashion beckons every inch of your body to be decorated with something cute, flashy or blingy. While wearing lolita, rings top the list of my favorite jewlery to wear.

Why? I’m partial to long sleeved cut-sews, blouses and cardigans so bracelets get lost. Same goes with earrings, I usually wear my hair down, so they’re rarely ever seen. I do love necklaces, but I keep running into logistical problems with them – the chains are rarely ever long enough to be seen  from underneath a large, ruffly peter pan collar but they’re also never short enough either – somehow the business end of the necklace always drops behind the neckline of my dress or shirt  completely obscuring the design.

So, rings it is! And multiple ones at that – I’d say I usually wear somewhere between 3-6 rings at a time (except when playing music, then I have to limit myself to 3-4!). I would totally wear more if I could find one more pinky ring and a few for my thumbs too. It’s also my way of making up for my lack of a manicure or lolita-fied nails.

How many rings do you wear typically?

Summer Style: Sandals Wednesday, May 27 2009

Summer has started unofficially, so if the temperatures haven’t increased in your area yet, it might be soon. Here in San Francisco it rarely gets warm enough to to warrant a change in wardrobe, but it will in other areas – introducing the age-old conundrum: How do you wear lolita in summer without overheating in all the layers?

An obvious option? Skip the socks and tights and wear sandals, peep-toes and sling-backs instead of mary-janes or boots. Some brands like BABY, The Stars Shine Bright and YOSUKE design sandals specifically for lolita styles, but there aren’t as many options so you might have to look outside the lolita brands to find a pair that will work with your lolita wardrobe.

If your into gothic or punk styles, finding sandals will be pretty easy since strappy sandals with studs and buckles are pretty in. Black is a good stand-by but white is also a great refreshing option. Don’t forget that other colors can look pretty gothic too. Check out these shoes which can be found at KERA Shop and YesStyle.com

On May 21, Metamorphose previewed a new line of clothing called Strawberry Cream. The sketches say it’s part of Meta’s Autumn/Winter 2009 plan but the product page says Summer 2009 and prominent fruit print and June/July release date make me think it’s a summer line that’s seen some production delays. Pre-orders open on June 6th.

I’m not normally a fan of prints, but I’m loving this one – especially the subtle vertical stripes. The hardest decision? Which style and color to pre-order on June 6th.

I’m back from Fanime 2009 and took some photos of real lolitas at the event and interviewed them about their outfits and thoughts on lolita fashion in general. Looking at celebrities for fashion cues is fun, but it’s interesting to see how real lolitas where the fashion. Here is part 1 from Fanime.

Your Best Dress Thursday, May 21 2009

I’m currently gearing up for a Memorial Day weekend event and am planning to wear 1-2 lolita  outfits. I’m a sucker for separates, which is why most of my lolita wardrobe consists of blouses, skirts and jumperskirts. However, whenever I have a special event, I find myself drawn to my best dress – an Angelic Pretty stripe mint green one-piece. It’s cute, and has lots of sweet details. Also I feel a dress looks much more formal than even the cutest coordinate of separates.

I don’t have too many dresses though because I somehow feel my ability to be creative with fashion is limited to what socks, shoes, purse and headdress I wear it with- but in the end, I feel the dress doesn’t look that different, no matter how I wear it.

What does your best dress look like? Do you ever get bored with your options when accessorizing it?

An Introduction to Lolita Nail Art Tuesday, May 19 2009

Gothic Lolita Nail Art from Mini Nail Blog

Gothic Lolita Nail Art from Mini Nail Blog

Lolita nail art is like adding sugar flowers to an already frosted cake – unnecessary, but it sure is pretty! If you’ve ever seen photos of lolita nail art in Gothic & Lolita Bible or Kera Magazine, you know that some of the designs can get pretty involved and are probably best left to professionals or serious nail art hobbyists. However, even a beginner can try their hand at nail art.

Some basic materials you need can be found at your local drug store or beauty store.

  • Artificial nails
  • Nail polish
  • Nail or body art decorations
  • Nail glue

But don’t stop their, stop at your local craft store for some of the following.

  • Lace
  • Small gems or beads
  • Tulle
  • Fabric or plastic flowers or bows
  • Chains
  • Small feathers

And, you can get creative by trying out stickers, cell phone decorations supplies and any other little bits and bobs that catch your attention.
